2013-05-13 21:50I'd like to give an update on upcoming plans for Ubuntu.com and to respond to recent concerns about the positioning of the community within the website. Earlier in the year we worked on an evolution of Ubuntu.com to reflect the expanded scope of the project in the main site structure. Our re-structuring conversations went beyond the existing website to cover the broader Ubuntu web ecosystem. We wanted to review how users gained access to key websites that were not linked to directly from Ubuntu.com. For example: developer.ubuntu.com, design.ubuntu.com, askubuntu.com… Our target users for these journeys were mainly community members or those new to Ubuntu who might be interested in getting involved or finding out more about how the community and Canonical work together to create Ubuntu. Our proposed solution consisted of a global navigation menu that was to go across all key sites so that – no matter which site users arrived at – they would be able to reach the main destinations in our ecosystem. This was to include a new community site that has been under discussion for some time by Canonical employees and members of the community. One key factor for this community site is the ability for community members to have direct input ..

2013-04-25 05:02Ubuntu is on an exciting journey, a journey of convergence. Our goal is to build a convergent Operating System that brings a uniformity of technology and experience across phones, tablets, desktops, and televisions, and smoothing the lines between those devices in terms of interoperability and access to content. It is a bold vision, but Ubuntu has a strong reputation both in terms of our heritage in the desktop, server, and cloud, and with our passionate and capable community. I just wanted to provide some updates on work that is going on in delivering this vision. There has been significant work going on in building Ubuntu Touch (the overall name for this convergent platform). The team have marked October in their calendars as the goal to have most of the primary components in the Ubuntu Touch code-base complete so we can deliver a fully converged system in Ubuntu 14.04. The Unity team have been working to centralize the different form factors into Unity Next, which you can play with now (weekly updates on progress coming soon here ), the Mir team are making good progress in getting Mir ready for deployment on handsets with a technical preview on the desktop in 13.10 (see the weekly updates ), and the Ubuntu SDK team are working ..

2013-04-05 14:41Not sure how many of you were following my previous blog post about a bunch of Django apps I built for my own personal use. I have finally released the source code into BitBucket. Here's a short copy and paste recap of what you can find: PCBank AKA myFinance This is a personal budgeting system which I have created, it has matured a lot throughout the past few months. I originally created it in October of 2011, as using a spreadsheet to keep track of all my expenses grew tedious. It can also manage roommates, and split bills accordingly. This is my most used app out of all of the apps I created. It also has an RSS and JSON interface for third party applications to fetch data. I use the RSS for a Live Bookmark to easily access all my online banking websites from my browser toolbar. I use the JSON interface with a mobile app I created so that I can easily check my bank balances on the go without needing to actually sign into my online bank website on an insecure wireless network. myProjects This app was created in recent months to keep track of my many projects I do. It keeps track of individual projects, which I can jot down notes about each one. I can create goals under each project and assign a due date for them. This makes ..

2013-04-01 18:24This blog post is about deploying Django apps. It is addressed primarily to WebFaction , but applies to any other hosts else with one-click installers for this kind of app. First, many thanks to WebFaction for their great service and support. I've got very few complaints about them in general. However, I think their approach to setting up Django projects is far from ideal, and makes life harder than it needs to be. The WebFaction Django docs tell us to create a new Django app by using the control panel and choosing an app of type ‘Django' and then choosing your Django version. This will install an Apache instance with mod_wsgi, and a copy of the Django sources, and set up a basic Django app skeleton. There are lots of problems with this: What happens when there is a security issue with Django? The user will need to have an upgrade mechanism. This is covered in the docs, but it is an 11 step process . And this process is a process they will first have to do in their development environment for testing, in some way, and then again on their live box. How many people will actually do that, especially for security releases that they don't feel they need? Experienced developers, of course, don't do this. For Django, I've ..

2013-03-29 00:39I am so very able to amuse myself with all these funny pictures, but there are other amusing subreddits other than funny. So today I added the ability to choose a different subreddit. This involved diving into the world of Ubuntu Components . Ubuntu Components were surprisingly functional, but as you will see, they are still a work in progress. So, the first thing I needed to do was to make a way for the user to say that they want to change subreddits. Ubuntu Touch provides the bottom edge for your application to add a list of commands. This is a nice way to do it because it means that the screen isn't cluttered with commands, but users know exactly where to go when they want them. The first thing to do is to ensure that the top level of your app is a MainView , and then you are presenting the content in a Page. So, roughly your apps structure looks like ... //imports MainView { //set MainView properties Page { //app UI content } //components outside pages } I wanted to add a "subreddit" button. To do that, I set the tools property of the page to a list of actions. So far there is only one action. Essentially, I am defining a button. I tell it the text I want, the icon to use (I downloaded an icon that I ..

2013-03-28 19:54We've just released Django 1.5.1, a bugfix release fixing a few issues with last month's 1.5 release. The biggest fix is for a memory leak introduced in Django 1.5. Under certain circumstances, repeated iteration over querysets could leak memory - sometimes quite a bit of it. If you'd like more information, the details are in our ticket tracker (and in a related issue in Python itself). If you've noticed memory problems under Django 1.5, upgrading to 1.5.1 should fix those issues. Django 1.5.1 also includes a couple smaller fixes: Module-level warnings emitted during tests are no longer silently hidden ( 18985 ). Prevented filtering on password hashes in the user admin ( 20078 ). All users are encouraged to upgrade to Django 1.5.1 at your earliest convenience. You can install Django using pip or download Django 1.5.1 from the Django downloads page . As always signed checksums of the package are available. On that last point: astute readers may notice that Django 1.5.1 is signed by a new key. Until today, all releases were signed by James Bennett, but to increase our bus factor we're moving to a system where multiple people will be authorized to release Django. See our Django releasers document for the list of approved ..

2013-03-26 18:18The Third Manifesto formally describes tuple types (RM prescription 6), tuple values (prescription 9), tuple variables (prescription 12) as well as other tuple-related elements. As mentioned in the previous post , a tuple value is a set of ordered triples each consisting of attribute name, type and value. Class Tuple of the TTM-inspired interface to PostgreSQL models TTM tuples as Python lists of TTM Attribute objects. Lists were used rather than sets because for many practical purposes the order of the attributes is useful (or has "meaning"), e.g., the first attribute listed is most often –even in purist relational theory presentations– the primary key or part of the primary key. The interface stores the Tuple heading as a (Python) n-tuple of name-type tuples, in the "internal use" _heading attribute. The n-tuple was chosen over a list due to its immutability. The interface also sets each Attribute as a Python attribute of the Tuple object. Thus, if you define a Tuple variable as follows: film = Tuple( Attribute('id', int, sysdefault=True), Attribute('title'), Attribute('release_year', int)]) You can then assign or access an Attribute using simple Python syntax: film.title = "Seven Samurai" if film.year == 1954: ..

2013-02-17 23:00Python - language of the decade Recently I found a PYPL - PopularitY of Programming Language index. It rediscovers the indicator of programming language popularity. Author argue that TIOBE index can be hypocritical due to the ambiguity of programming languages name, and introduce other phrases to use in Google Trends. Looking at the author study, we can deduce that Python has the biggest increase in the last decade. What's better we can see good linear growth for 10 years! Greetings for Python! The plot is interesting indeed, because constant line doesn't mean bad. It's mean that constantly some group of people (for Java and PHP - a large group) wants to learn this language. Python is the only language which behaves different here. As we known Python start from scripting and scientific fields, and now becomes increasingly popular, hitting the technologies which are dominated by web and business. Those technologies are supported by big companies (Java, C, C++), which pay big money for support, and web (PHP, Ruby), which makes a lot of noise in the internet. It is very difficult to become popular in such big competition. And Python get it successively. For me this is the reason why Python is the language of the decade. ..

2013-02-03 18:07It"s a pity that so many installation instructions for Python packages assume that pip is already installed : it's not installed by Python installers, and installation instructions for pip are only for Linux / OS X, not for Windows. So, potential Windows users of those packages are left scrambling for instructions. Furthermore, these instructions include complex procedures, and do not explain how to deal with multiple Python versions (2.x and 3.x). Yet, python is often used on windows . I've developed Pip for Windows to address these issues. It is a tiny Python Package manager that automatically installs pip on Windows. I suggest that package providers recommend it, as I have for pyDatalog . Its GUI also lets you: install any package from pypi, or upgrade it using pip instruction set list all installed packages with their version number upgrade all packages in the local library, in one click switch from one python interpreter (i.e. version) to another (including pypy ) See the Home page for screen shot and user guide.

2013-01-31 17:47The key to improving today's workforce could lie in the elementary school math class, new research shows. A study by University of Missouri researchers identified how a lack of a specific math skill in first grade correlated to lower scores on a seventh-grade math test used to determine employability and wages in adults. David Geary, a Missouri professor and the study's lead author, said the research made a connection between child psychology and labor economics in order to examine the roots of America's shortage of mathematically proficient workers. Data from the United States Center for Educational Statistics revealed that one in five adults lacks the math competency expected of an eighth-grader.

2013-01-12 20:03graph-tool is a Python module for the creation, manipulation, analysis and display of graphs (the computer science data structure, not computer graphics, though it can display graphs as graphics). I took a look at some of the code examples of graph-tool. It is fairly easy to understand and use for simple cases, e.g. there are simple library calls to create a new graph, add vertices to it, add edges between vertices, etc. Quick excerpt: from graph_tool.all import * g = Graph() v1 = g.add_vertex() v2 = g.add_vertex() e = g.add_edge(v1, v2) And to draw the above graph: graph_draw(g, vertex_text=g.vertex_index, vertex_font_size=18, output_size=(200, 200), output="two-nodes.pdf") The above code creates this image: It supports both directed and undirected graphs. Though exposed as a Python module, graph-tool is internally written in C++ using the Boost Graph Library . It also makes extensive use of template metaprogramming for performance. The graphics drawing is based on the Cairo Graphics library , which I blogged about recently.

2012-12-31 14:58We've seen a lot of changes in media this year: from new devices and multiple screens driving responsive design , to the rise of native advertising , and the importance of imagery on social networks. The media is an industry that, for the most part, tends to innovate quickly, at the risk of dying. And most of the trends and disruptions that media face usually affect marketers shortly thereafter. So with that, here are three things the media has learned this year that marketers ought to pay attention to as they head into 2013.

2012-12-24 03:40Think of how Android uses Java, but instead of Java, we replace it with Python! I have been pondering the idea of building a Python-based Operating System on top of the Linux kernel, much like how Android uses Java. However, I wanted to take it a step further and build most of the system components using Python, this way most of the Operating System can be modified by anybody who understands Python code. This can allow anybody with Python experience to extend and fully customize the entire operating system. Since Python allows modules to be built using C, this can allow specific system components to benefit from speed where needed, such as a graphical interface. Using C interfaces also allows every part of the Linux kernel to be easily exposed to Python when attempting to build such an Operating System. A large benefit of such an operating system is application portability, at least applications which are made in pure Python. The entire Operating System will run anywhere you can compile the Linux Kernel and Python into, with less effort than say porting all of Linux over to a different chipset. Python apps don't need to be re-compiled for the target CPU, and if most of the Operating System is made in Python, porting is made a cinch. ..

2012-12-13 17:09Native advertising is hot right now, even if nobody seems to know exactly what it is Solve Media , a digital advertising firm, has attempted to solve that problem with this infographic, which takes a stab at a standard definition: "Native advertising refers to a specific mode of monetization that aims to augment user experience by providing value through relevant content delivered in-stream." Actually, that's pretty good. As the rest of the graphic shows, native advertising is clearly where the money is going in the industry. At the very least, when ad execs are throwing the term around at Christmas parties, they can be on the same page

2012-12-13 08:25This blog post is a short explanation how to give and consume environment variables in your (Python) code. It's a nice little trick, but if you are not well-versed in UNIX systems you might not know it. Table Of Content 1. Configuring your application 2. Using environment variables in UNIX 3. Another trick: socket.gethostname() Please see the original blog post for syntax color examples. 1. Configuring your application An application can be configured usually in three ways. Through command-line arguments (I prefer simplistic plac library with Python) configuration files (I prefer YAML or Python standard library ConfigParser for INI style files) environment variables The two first ones are the most well-known methods. However, the last option is the easiest for quick and dirty hacks. 2. Using environment variables in UNIX Note: Environment variables work alike in UNIX and Windows. However, I have no longer valid experience about Windows and how to set environment variables in the latest cmd.exe incarnations. 2012-12-08 19:10You may have heard about FitBit badges support in Ubuntu Accomplishments system. Matt Fisher and Chris Wayne have written a new collection of accomplishments which pulls in your FitBit badges to other trophies. You can learn more about what awesome work they did by reading their articles ] ]. To those of you thinking “Hey, that app is Ubuntu accomplishments. How does FitBit relate to Ubuntu?”: that's what a separate collection means. All trophies are grouped in sets – each set may relate to a different community, may be developed by completely different people – and such sets are called collections . You can think about them as of plugins or add-ons. Collections are installed separatelly, and are optional. That means that you are free to install FitBit accomplishments alongside Ubuntu trophies, and that you can also use just FitBit badges and remove default collections that award you for being active in Ubuntu community. Now why do I consider FitBit trophies a milestone for the project? Ubuntu Accomplishments System has reached the level on which creating third-party collections is simple and clear. The appearance of FitBit accomplishments symbolises how extensive this platform is, that it can be used to present achievements ..

2012-12-05 08:44After reading this book I can say that I have a better understanding on how this Ubuntu operating works. The nice thing about this book compared to other books on Ubuntu that cover how to use Ubuntu, is this books covers not only these topics, but goes over why and how Ubuntu came into being and thoroughly teaches the readers how the Ubuntu community runs and operates. I have seen first hand what happens in the Ubuntu community when a new helpful hand joins and speeds up the Ubuntu development. This books helps people know the option to join is available. This book also goes over how to get your app into the Ubuntu Software center, the app where people install software for their Ubuntu system. Basically this book starts out explaining what Ubuntu is, then moves on to installing it, the command line and running it as a server. but the main selling point in the book is the books ability to comprehensibly show how the Ubuntu community works and this is where other books fall short compared to this book. Highly recommend to people wanting to install Ubuntu, and even someone wanting to help make Ubuntu even better.

2012-11-07 12:30After the first one , I wrote another search provider for gnome-shell >= 3.6 in python, this time for flipping through your github repositories. Screencast on vimeo . Source on github . Fedora package review in bugzilla . A standing problem is how to prompt the user for their authentication tokens. Right now, I require that the user maintain a ~/.search-github file by hand including their github username and password. Ugly, but it works. Best, I think, would be to integrate with GNOME Online Accounts. However, it appears that I cannot write a plugin for that . What other approaches are available? I could use a modal prompt kind of like when NetworkManager prompts you for a wifi or VPN password and could then save credentials to the keyring. I haven't yet figured out how to create that prompt yet though, so if anyone knows.. kindly point me in the right direction. Other ideas?

2012-10-31 03:43By Vasudev Ram psutil is a versatile and cross-platform Python module for getting process and related information from the operating system. Though the name psutil indicates that it works like the UNIX ps command (for p rocess s tatus), it does a lot more, and works on other platforms too. IIRC, I had come across it earlier, but thought it was only for UNIX-like systems. I recently tried out psutil on Windows. For certain Windows system processes, it may not give some info, due to those processes being privileged, according to one of the psutil authors, Giampaolo Rodola, who I emailed about it. He said: "On Windows you can't access all information about processes owned by NT AUTHORITY SYSTEM user. In those cases psutil will raise AccessDenied exception." psutil can provide some information on: - CPU time - virtual memory - swap memory (sic) - disk partitions - disk usage - disk and network I/O - users - processes: name, executable name, working directory, command line, user name, user ids and group ids, threads, connections, file descriptors. Here is a simple psutil test program which shows just a few features - output not well formatted, but readable. Try it on Windows or UNIX/Linux: test_psutil_00.py import psutil for pid in psutil.get_pid_list(): ..

2012-10-28 16:42The 12.10 release is the first version of Ubuntu that supports Secure Boot out of the box. In what is largely an accident of release timing, from what I can tell (and please correct me if I'm wrong), this actually makes Ubuntu 12.10 the first general release of any OS to support Secure Boot. (Windows 8 of course is also now available; and I'm sure Matthew Garrett, who has been a welcome collaborator throughout this process, has everything in good order for the upcoming Fedora 18 release.) That's certainly something of a bittersweet achievement. I'm proud of the work we've done to ensure Ubuntu will continue to work out of the box on the consumer hardware of the future; in spite of the predictable accusations on the blogowebs that we've sold out, I sleep well at night knowing that this was the pragmatic decision to make, maximizing users' freedom to use their hardware. All the same, I worry about what the landscape is going to look like in a few years' time. The Ubuntu first-stage EFI bootloader is signed by Microsoft, but the key that is used for signing is one that's recommended by Microsoft, not one that's required by the Windows 8 certification requirements. Will all hardware include this key in practice? The Windows 8 requirements ..

2012-10-26 03:54Portland Trailblazers rookie Damian Lillard wasn't a highly touted high school player coming up in Oakland, Calif., and he didn't attend a powerhouse NBA -feeder college program like Duke or Kentucky. But the kid. Can. Ball. Now, as Lillard begins his first season as a professional point guard out of Weber State University, social media is playing a key role in introducing him to NBA fans. Beefed up Twitter and Instagram presences coupled with an ongoing YouTube mini-documentary series have helped raise Lillard's profile among non-hardcore hoops fans in ways that wouldn't have been possible just several years ago. Of course, none of that digital promotion would exist if not for Lill&8230; Continue reading..

2012-10-25 16:01During the height of the OMG Ubuntu! transition, it dawned on my that Juju was missing one key feature: an interactive front end. Eight months ago, while at POSSCON 2012 I started working on what I called “Juca” at the time, a project I eventually renamed to Amulet. Amulet is a SaaS that is designed to provide an always available Juju UI for admins and users to manage. The idea was simple, and there was demand for it. I then spent the next eight months scrapping, rebuilding, and scrapping again until I was satisfied with the progress and overall functionality. During this time, I had heard rumors that Juju was building a UI. This news made my heart sink. How can I offer a SaaS solution if Juju comes with a UI out of the box? I was relieved to hear that it would probably be a UI that was available on the bootstrap node, making it only able to manage the current deployed environment. Amulet operates by managing multiple environments per user. I decided to press on. With UDS fast approaching, I increased work on the project, including splitting off the library I created to Github as a sign of good will that I eventually intended on releasing more portions open source. My goal was to show off the work so far and gain feedback from Juju

2012-10-11 01:40As many of you know, I love Ubuntu. I've given years of my life for Ubuntu. I've served as much as anyone's expected to, and long upheld the ideology and technical motivations behind Ubuntu as second to none. Until recently. Now, with advertisements in the default DE (and don't tell me they're not, when I search for term and get “The Terminator” on DVD, it's a ad if you care so much about whatever binding to search applications, why not disable ads by default, and let super-s do your “shopping”), and now, begging for a handout when people Download Ubuntu without an option to donate to Debian , which composes over 70% of the Desktop, I get upset. I feel cheated, and I'm not even involved on a day-to-day anymore. I'm ashamed of what's going on now, and I hope we find a better way to serve our users.

2012-10-07 23:35Thanks to Tero Karvinen , I kept a guest lecture at Haaga-Helia on their Linux as a server course. I didn't really talk about servers but about my experiences and work with open source, especially Xubuntu. I had prepared slides for the talk partly based on my article about benefits of open source and I did talk for almost an hour just going through my notes, but still there were some aspects that I only understood (better) when giving the lecture. Open source projects and self-management In addition to the fact that you can work with anything you like, whenever you like and however you like, open source projects can actually give a good opportunity to learn self-management. This is true especially with projects with time-based releases, because every deadline is a deadline . Even if the deadline was a soft deadline and your feature or fix isn't release critical, you should still try to schedule your work so that you will meet the deadline. Every time you fail to meet the deadline is an opportunity to learn. The most common reason to have failed to meet a deadline is too little scheduled time. There are several possibilities why this might have happened, and some of them are more less out of sight, if you're inexperienced. ..

2012-10-06 07:55A couple of days ago i released Django Transactional , a module for django that will make thing lot easier for common django ModelForm transactions. Today i extended it a bit and released 0.5, including these new functionality: Now it includes a base template so you don't need to create one, it will try to get your custom template and if it's not found it will use default one that just renders your form as_p in a form tag with id Model Form. New mandatory key configuration 'include' which will be the dict used to format urls: 'include': { 'app_or_nick1': 'model_or_nick1', 'model_or_nick2'], 'app_or_nick2': 'model_or_nick3', 'model_or_nick4'], } Improved url generation using 'include' key to get less 404 probabilities. If you want to contribute or just look at the code you can go to the bitbucket branch . And as usual, patches and feedback are welcome!

2012-10-02 18:53Ubuntu relies on “Masters of the Universe” or MOTUs to keep the universe and multiverse components of Ubuntu in good working order. Unlike main, which is officially supported by Canonical, universe and multiverse are community supported. So MOTUs are community members who spend their time adding, maintaining, and supporting these repos. Even though I work for Canonical, I don't have any special powers. If I want to upload a package to universe or multiverse, I need to talk to a MOTU or become one. In order to become one, I need to do the work and gain the experience required, just like anyone else in the community would. Since I came into this job without having done much of this tyoe of work before, I've started the process of becoming a MOTU by working with a mentor, Robert Ancell . Robert has helped me with the process, pointed out mistakes, and suggested packages to work on and has been a big help along the way. Note: You must also be a Debian developer to get the battle cat. Also, Robert Ancell does not have blond hair. So why do I want to become a MOTU? Personally, my motivation has several aspects: I want to give back to the community I want to learn more about Ubuntu and about the processes being used It will ..

2012-10-02 06:08Pre-Internet, the motto for shopping could've been "try and buy." Nowadays, social media and mobile devices add a new dimension to the retail experience. Online tools such as review sites, social networks and smartphones produce data for merchants that, if analyzed properly "in real time," can transform the way consumers shop, according to a new infographic by custom development firm Symphony Teleca. This, in turn, would equal big bucks for business owners. "By mining the mountain of internal and external data they're compiling, retailers can provide targeted, relevant and timely offers to their customers, simultaneously improving the customer shopping experience

2012-09-15 02:29I admit that my last post sucked. I've been working on a few things that I want to blog about, but it's going to take time to get all my ducks in a row. So, that post was mostly “filler”. Read as “I haven't blogged in a while, and should probably put something up”. Sorry. However, I finally have something you can sink your teeth into: true random number generation. Consider the following scenario: you wish to generate a long-term cryptographic key. Maybe an OpenPGP key, an SSH key, an SSL key, OTR, whatever. What sucks, is these utilities rely on the Linux kernel software device /dev/random as a source of true randomness to get their seed or numbers. However, /dev/random will block, or stop responding, when the system has run out of entropy. So, you sit and wait, maybe moving your mouse around and mashing your keyboard, to generate more entropy for the system. I personally keep an encrypted file with all the passwords for all the servers, web sites, and accounts that I login to. On a regular basis, I'll rotate through the passwords. So, I typically will use my Password Card as a source for these passwords. But, suppose I wanted to use a password generator instead. The “apg” tool is a good solution. On your system, run the following: ..

2012-09-05 23:33Recently I have been working with David Planella and Michael Hall on my team around a new specification for empowering app developers to deliver their content in Ubuntu. This post provides some background information around this work and the problem it seeks to solve. Like many of you, I am hugely proud of the progress we have made with Ubuntu over the years. We have worked together to create a simple, powerful experience underlined with the foundation of our core Ubuntu values of creating a free platform, available to all, in your language, irrespective of (dis)ability. While our platform has been growing and maturing, in recent years we have been presented with a new challenge that we need to solve: making it simple for content creators to deliver their content in Ubuntu . Ubuntu is not the only thing that is maturing. Mother nature needs a helping hand to keep this solid slab o' Bacon in it's prime. A Little History When Ubuntu was started the competitive landscape was very different. We focused on being the best Linux distribution we could and making Ubuntu as powerful, reliable, and flexible as possible. Back then our primary competition was Microsoft with their Windows platform, but we could compete there by making ..

2012-09-05 21:12Constructing digital strategies on behalf of clients makes one thing clear: Clients are often confused about what digital strategy is and how to actually develop one. When defining and developing strategy, marketers and agencies must ensure that their clients understand that strategy follows structure, it follows people, and it follows an idea. Second, they must make sure that clients get that profit and ROI are outcomes, not the strategy itself. If you're wondering what developing such a strategy looks like, here are the key steps. Plan and Assess First you have to define what you're hoping to achieve for your brand, product, or service.

2012-09-01 10:44As some of you know, I am working on a server-side git management system called Gitano which currently only allows incoming authenticated connections via SSH . It then uses the presented SSH public key to identify the incoming user and grant permissions appropriately. A very good friend of mine has asked if I might be persuaded to support HTTPS access to Gitano. To do this, I need a way to identify incoming users. I was hoping to be able to use their SSH public keys to that end. I know it's possible to get an appropriately formatted (i.e. then openssl tool can read it) RSA public key out of an SSH public key (assuming it's an RSA one) by the simple expedient of ssh-keygen -e -m PKCS8 -f somekey.pub > somekey.pub.rsa however I am now stuck as to how to allow the user to use that public key to engage in establishing an SSL connection (for HTTPS ).

2012-08-31 22:32People sometimes ask me to recommend a book for learning to program or a book on Python. If you want both in one book, i.e. to learn Python as a first programming language, take a look at Allen Downey's new book Think Python . If you're an experience programmer and just want a book on the specifics of Python, I'd recommend David Beazley's Python Essential Reference . These two books are at opposite ends of the scale. Downey's book is a very gentle introduction to programming. He takes the time to explain things that authors often don't realize need to be explained. Beazley's book is all about Python per se , not programming. The title says "reference," and it does make a good reference, but you could sit down and read through the first half of the book. The second half of the book really is more of a reference.
